NCRCL Open Day

An open day hosted by the National Centre for Research in Children’s Literature at the University of Roehampton, London.

Saturday 16th May 2020
10am – 1pm
Grove House, Froebel

Our guest speakers this year are Kim Reynolds and Jane Rosen. Details of their keynote are as follows:

Rebellious Reading: Working with Neglected Materials

Two of the editors of Reading and Rebellion: an anthology of radical writing for children, 1900-1960 (OUP, 2019) share their experiences of creating an anthology of little-known materials. As well as offering practical insights into compilation and editing, they will focus on how the materials in the anthology fill in gaps in the understanding of writing for children in Britain during the twentieth century. For instance, well before the focus on racism, sexism and classism in the 1960s and 1970s, these materials feature girls, working-class children and those from some ethnic minorities in positive roles that are central to the books. The discussion will also consider how certain genres, topics and concerns from the first half of the century prepared the way for some of the best known and most influential post 1950s writing for children.

More information about what you can expect on the day:

A second-hand ‘suitcase’ bookshop will be run by Judy Digby, a recent graduate of the MA Children’s Literature. Please note the shop can only accept cash.

Our current dissertation students will also be giving poster presentations. There will be prizes for the best posters – one awarded to DL (or otherwise absent) students and one to an Open Day attendee!

We will also have a PhD stall, run by current PhD students working in the field of children’s literature, so do come and have a chat with them if you are interested in doctoral study.

Please book your free place by contacting Julia Noyce at Julia.Noyce@roehampton.ac.uk
